Otter Folk
The Otters are both the most playful and hardest working of the Tribes. The otters of our plane are renowned for their fun-loving natures, and the same is true of their cousins in the Otherworlds. However, Otters are also some of the most organized and feared hunters in the animal kingdom, and it is prudent not to forget this if one finds oneself in their lands.
Otter Folk place a great deal of emphasis on community and teamwork. They are a very social tribe and do almost everything together—eating, sleeping, playing, grooming. Much like wolves, they hunt as a pack, helping each other trap fish in the shallows of their watery homes. Communication is rapid and constant, each Otter knowing where the others are at all times. Otters have a very good sense of proportion, balancing leisure and work in an effortless dance. As Hunters, they know and honor their place in the web of life, and take only what they need to keep their tribe hale and healthy.
The lesson of the Otters is one of balance: between work and play, need and desire, life and death. They understand that balance is not two sides of a scale that are equal and unchanging. Instead, balance is a state of constant and dynamic change. Like all of the Water tribes, fluidity is a core value to the Otter Folk; but Otter brings the qualities of Fire to the Water peoples, blessing them with creativity and drive in addition to adaptability. There is joy and there is duty. If one works hard enough at it, there is joy in duty as well.
Otters are most comfortable in their animal form, since it is quite efficient for hunting (and playing!). However, when they appear as humans, they tend towards small stature and dark or russet coloring. Both river and ocean Otter varieties appear in the Otherworlds, and while somewhat different in appearance, they share the same overall characteristics. While playful amongst themselves, they are extremely territorial and do not take kindly to strangers.
